Brian was going to San Diego for work so Colin and I tagged along on a little 4 day getaway. My parents, with a little help from our babysitter Danielle, kindly watched Tyler & Lucas while we were gone. As usual, the boy had so much fun with Glammie & Papa they felt like they were on vacation too.
Colin on his first plane ride at 8 weeks and 1 day old.
When we arrived at the airport the ticketing agent asked me for Colin’s birth certificate to prove he was under the age of 2 since he was flying as a lap child. I panicked about missing our flight since I’d never thought to bring it along. Thankfully, she took a peak at him and decided he was either extremely malnourished or clearly within the age guidelines and let us check-in. She did make a disturbing comment with accompanying hand motions about how he needed to be over 2 weeks old too fly or his underdeveloped eardrums would “explode”. (This turns out to be erroneous information since AA allows infants as young as 2 days old to fly but at the time it was a little unsettling.)
I was pretty nervous about how he would do on the flight and neurotically had 6 pacifiers in quick reach in case the first five managed to get lost or dirty. I anticipated having to provide cocktails for the entire plane but was happily relieved Colin was perfectly quiet the entire flight.
He was just as good on the return flight but I am pretty sure the people sitting near us boarded the plane and saw our infant plus the dog in the row directly behind and were not too happy about their seats.
Although the experts say he can only focus on things less than 12 inches away Colin attempts to check out the view at 25,000 feet.
We stayed in the Gaslamp Quarter which is a 16 block historic district that has over 200 restaurants, bars and shops. The stores ranged from an outdoor mall to lots of little boutiques. It was a perfect place for Colin and I to walk around during the day while Brian was in meetings.
There is also a lot of nightlife in the area and lots of great dining options. Our first night we walked around for almost an hour overwhelmed by our options and trying to decide. Since Colin still sleeps so much and is so portable in his infant seat he easily came along with us to restaurants were we would never have dared to take the older boys. We wisely took a pass on visiting the hookah lounge though.
When Colin and I weren’t shopping we strolled around under the palm trees and hung out at the pool. Colin was so good and made it such a relaxing trip.
Colin puts in some tummy time poolside.
Since there were so many dining choices we had to get in as many as possible. One night we went to one place for appetizers, another for dinner and yet another for dessert. Some of our favorites we found were JSix, Toscana & Searsucker.
Splitting a massive sundae at Ghirardelli our first evening in San Diego. No matter how full we were from dinner dessert was never optional.
Dessert on night two was at Heavenly Cupcakes and our final evening was gelato at Chocolat Cremiere. After eating we generally walked around for a bit before heading back to our room or the outdoor fireplace at our hotel.
We loved out trip and can’t wait to go back. Thanks again to my parents for helping out with Tyler & Lucas.
